Things to see & do
Dundee is ranked one of 10 “hot destinations” to visit in 2018 by The Wall Street Journal.
City of Discovery
Down on Dundee’s newly built Waterfront you can visit the V&A – one of Europe’s most beautifully designed museums, or board the RRS Discovery ship, which actually sailed to the Antarctic.
Dundee City Centre is only 5 miles from the Thatched Cottage.
Train, bus and Airport links can be found here.
There is so much to see and do in Dundee and its surrounding areas.
If you are after some fun history of Dundee then we highly recommend booking a walking tour with DD Tours – Dundee City Walking Tours https://www.ddtours.co.uk/
The McManus Galleries which is located in the City Centre is free to visit and has 2 floors of artefacts from Dundee’s vibrant history – you can spend hours here and is good for all ages!
Sir Winston Churchill – the Prime Minister during World War II, lived in Dundee for 14 years, and the Sir Winston Churchill plaque, is located in the Nethergate.
If you are travelling with children then there is a huge amount of activities to choose from and we have listed some of our favourites at the bottom of the page.
Dundee has a wide choice of pubs, boutique bars and restaurants you will be spoiled for choice.
If shopping is your thing then the City Centre and the Overgate Shopping Centre have most major clothing and coffee shops from Marks & Spencer, Debenhams, JD Sports, Next, Stormfront, Primark, Costa, etc. Edinburgh is very good for shopping and is only an hour on the train from Dundee.
Broughty Ferry (4 miles) is the nearest town centre with a lot of cafes, restaurants, shops, clothes boutiques, pubs, chemists, butchers, doctor surgery, the stunning Broughty Ferry Castle Museum, and the famous Visocchi’s Ice Cream Cafe Shop. The beautiful award winning beach is a must-see, and you can also pre-book the famous boat tour with Pirate Boats Ltd to see the Seals, Dolphins, Lighthouse, the V&A from the water and much more.
This is highly recommended. https://www.pirateboatsltd.com/
The famous River Tay is the longest river in Scotland.
NOT SO FUN FACT:
The Tay Rail Bridge was built over the River Tay from Dundee to Fife and was completed in February 1878. At the time it was the longest bridge in the world. The Tay Rail Bridge disaster occurred during a violent storm on Sunday 28 December 1879, when the first Tay Rail Bridge collapsed as a train from Burntisland to Dundee passed over it, killing all aboard.
There’s no better place to play a round of golf than Scotland, the country that invented the game! With over 550 golf courses to play, including legendary Championship Courses such as the Carnoustie Golf Links (15 minutes drive away) and the Old Course at St Andrews (13 miles drive away).
A little closer to home is Forbes of Kingennie Resort that holds a 9 hole golf course with golf buggies to hire, Driving Range, Cairngorms Putting Green, Fishing, Angus Thistle Maze, Bar/Restaurant) and is only 1.5 miles from our cottage. This can be walked from the Thatched Cottage via Wellbank and is around 2.2 miles (40-minute walk).
The Thatched Cottage is the perfect location for a golf break in Scotland.
From sleeping 9 (we recommend 8 adults), the spaciousness of the property and having plenty of storage for golf clubs, trollies, etc. It’s never been easier to travel between courses by car or we can even recommend specialist golf travel transport so you can travel in style.
After your game (hopefully, you won), you come back to the Thatched Cottage for a game of pool and a relaxing hot tub to ease those aching muscles and warm up!
Some other golf courses that are a must-play while you are here are –
- Kings Course at Gleneagles
- Ailsa at Turnberry
- North Berwick (West Links)
- Kingsbarns Golf Links
- Castle Stuart
- Royal Dornoch
